Carpenters specialize in constructing, installing, and repairing timber structures for buildings and other frameworks, working with wood, engineered materials, and composite products.

 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Planning & Preparation:

    • Interpret blueprints and technical specifications to determine material needs and construction methods

    • Calculate quantities and select appropriate timber/materials

    • Prepare detailed layouts and cutting plans

 

  • Fabrication & Assembly:

    • Measure, cut, and shape wood/materials to precise specifications

    • Pre-assemble structural components and fittings

 

  • Construction & Installation:

    • Build and erect structural frameworks (walls, roofs, floors)

    • Install sub-floors, flooring systems, and verify structural alignment

    • Attach exterior cladding, fascia boards, and roof sheathing

    • Fit door/window frames and prefabricated components

  • Core Construction Skills

    • Safely operate carpentry tools and equipment

    • Handle and prepare timber/materials for construction

    • Perform basic demolition of minor structures

    • Conduct accurate construction measurements and calculations

     

    Structural Framing & Installation

    • Set out building components to specifications

    • Install flooring systems and subfloor structures

    • Construct and erect wall and ceiling frames

    • Build and install roof trusses and pitched roof systems

    • Construct and install eaves and exterior cladding

    • Install windows, doors, and external timber staircases

    • Apply interior linings, panelling, and mouldings

     

    Formwork & Concrete Work

    • Erect and dismantle formwork for footings and slabs

    • Perform basic concreting for simple formwork

     

    Safety & Compliance

    • Work safely at heights and on scaffolding

    • Identify hazards and implement risk controls

    • Apply WHS policies and procedures

     

    Planning & Communication

    • Interpret construction plans and specifications

    • Calculate material requirements for projects

    • Communicate effectively in construction environments

    • Apply sustainable work practices
